Thanks, Dave - I'm glad things worked out, and that I was able to help. Since this blog posting, I've also received a couple of article proposals from first-time writers, and things are looking good in both cases. I'm sure they will have contracts by the end of next week!

Regarding ``I can't write:'' I found my first experience with a professional editor, Lee Schlesinger of Linux.com, extremely worthwhile. Not only was he kind in dealing with a first-timer, but his suggestions on improving my writing, sometimes said and sometimes gleaned from a wdiff of my submission and his corrections, were invaluable: my next submission came back with many fewer changes and I feel my writing has improved.

In short, I was paid to improve my writing. Is there a better deal than that?

Brian: my greatest fear, in writing and in many other things, is fear of the unknown. In your LUG/IP presentation, and in this post, I think you do a good job of showing outsiders what technology article writing entails. I deeply appreciate that, and I thank you once again.
